Introduction:
“Wherever you go, whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be there with you!”
As an Irish woman living abroad, I have always embraced my ‘Irishness’, I have found my ancestry to be a huge part of my personality, my values, and my drive.
When you meet someone from anywhere in the world and you tell them you’re Irish, you are greeted with a twinkle in their eye and a fond story or memory they have of a trip they once made to Ireland or a connection they have to the Emerald Isle.
The Irish people are world-renowned for their hospitality, their ‘Irish candour’, dancing, singing & merriment and of course their resilience.
Ireland is a small country indeed, but it certainly has a big personality. Spanning generations of cultural unrest – a result of famine, oppression, civil wars, invasions, the troubles, racism and divide – it is surprising that the Irish collectively claim a chirpy disposition. Or is it. I personally believe that it is because of the struggles that the Irish Resilience was born. A true and wholesome desire to strive for better, for more. A belief that the unjust history has laid the foundations of a nation of people who have risen from the ashes of oppression and as wild geese have flown all the corners of the world and built upon it a perspective for their future.
Being ‘lucky’ enough to have interviewed many successful Irish people from all over the world, it is a distinct trait that I can hear in their voice, see in their eye and feel deep within them.
Resilience is a developed skill, practiced and practiced, put into play every day in every way. Many things can create resilience many factors and emotions play a part in its development and strength. And everyone’s results can be different.
We punch well above our weight in Sport, Music, Business, Film and many other areas throughout the world, begs the question is it due to the Luck of the Irish or something else?
“The luck of the Irish” is probably a saying you’ve heard time and time again, most likely either around St. Patrick’s Day, or to do with a sports team or sporting personality. From or associated with Ireland.
You probably thought the meaning has something to do with the extreme good fortune of the people of Ireland, but originally the “Irish phrase” had a different connotation. Like, many things ‘Irish’ it was developed in response to the Irish by the Americans. Where many ‘Irish’ stories are known to have begun.
According to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of “1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History,” the term is not Irish in origin.
“During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth…Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression ‘luck of the Irish.’ Living in Australia, I would imagine that on the goldfields of Australia a similar story could be told.
“Of course, it carried with it a certain tone of derision, as if to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these fools succeed.”
I challenge that they were not familiar with the term resilience in the 19th century.
Other theories connecting to, ‘The Luck of the Irish’ come from our ancient mystical origins.
Ireland is a mystical country, and its dynamic ties to Celtic mythology significantly shape its cultural identity.
Great myths, legends, tall tales, and fables citing mythic creatures are forever burned in the minds of those of us raised in the Emerald Isle. Given this, it is safe to say that Irish mythology just may also play a role in tracing the term “the luck of the Irish.”
Many people across the globe believe that the classic expression actually refers to Ireland’s mythical mascot: the leprechaun.
And of course, in addition to that, there is of course the four-leaf clover, the rabbit foot and the lucky horseshoe to name but a few…. There are many different symbols that represent ‘Luck’ Superstition and prosperity.
In my belief, it is ‘resilience’ that attributes to the ‘Luck of the Irish’ that pure determination, passion, drive and commitment to excellence and productivity. Its the ability to get back up again after getting knocked down, the ability to be strong in the face of adversity and to learn and grow from your experiences. And to achieve success in business, life, sport, and work. Some may call that luck I call it “The Resilience of the Irish”, not quite as catchy as “The Luck of The Irish” but who knows it may catch on.
